Palermitans once bought excellent quality food products at advantageous prices at the market. Today, unfortunately, they have transformed into a tourist attraction, losing their authenticity.
The most famous markets
Vucciria Market
It was once Palermo's most characteristic market, immortalized in the film "Dimenticare Palermo" (To Forget Palermo). The name "Vucciria" derives from the French word "boucherie," meaning butcher shop. It stretches behind Piazza San Domenico.
Capo Market
The oldest and largest. It stretches along Via Carini and Beati Paoli, Via S. Agostino, and Via Cappuccinelle. One of the main entrances is Porta Carini, near the Palace of Justice.
Ballarò Market
It stretches from Corso Tukory (Porta Sant'Agata along the ancient bastions) to Casa Professa. It winds through several streets. Here, it's still possible to find local patrons and make good deals.
The Flea Market
At Papireto (daily) or Piazza Marina (Sundays only). Here you can find antique furniture, modern design pieces, ceramics, toys, paintings, furnishings, and all sorts of other items – a real attraction for both locals and tourists who love old knick-knacks.
