The History
The construction dates back to 1185 on the remains of an even older Christian basilica. Over the centuries, the Cathedral of Palermo, dedicated to the Most Holy Virgin Mary, has undergone numerous modifications carried out in different eras due to the many dominations.
Thus, the Arab-Norman and Catalan Gothic styles harmoniously coexist. The beauty of the monument's exterior, characterized by spires, towers, and domes, contrasts with an excessive linearity of the interiors, which were once particularly rich and elaborate.
Of this past splendor, all that remains is the altar, finished in semi-precious stones, marble, and bronze, and the remnants of the tribunal built by ANTONELLO GAGINI, which was destroyed during a renovation.
Inside the Cathedral of Palermo are preserved symbols of the city's and the entire island's history: in a silver urn, the remains of the Patron Saint Rosalia, the bodies of Stupor Mundi Frederick II, his wife Constance of Aragon, Henry VI, Roger II, and Constance of Altavilla.
