Church of the Most Holy Trinity of the Magione

The History

The church was founded in 1191 by the chancellor of the Norman kingdom, Matteo d'Ajello, from whom it takes its name, and was annexed to the adjoining Cistercian abbey. In 1197, it was ceded to the Teutonic Knights order, who increased its prestige. In 1782, the church passed to the Bourbons, who modernized its structure, transforming it from a medieval to a Neoclassical building. Subsequently, due to the damage it sustained, it was partially rebuilt.
On the exterior, the church features a Baroque portal and an interesting interplay of blind arches behind the apses. The interior has a basilical plan with three naves. The spacious areas testify to its past as an abbey, when the rite was presided over by the entire community of monks.
The 12th-century Cistercian cloister in Arab-Norman style, with the remains of an Arab tower, is very interesting.
